What is Self Worth, Anyways?
Self worth is a fundamental, internal belief about your value, dignity and worth as a human being, independent of external validation or accomplishments. Where self-esteem is “here’s everything I do that makes me good”, self worth is a deep knowing that we are valuable, lovable and worthy, just for simply being ourselves.
Self worth influences so much of how you show up in the world, including how you interact with others, cope with stress, pursue goals, the relationships we maintain and the situations we find ourselves in. When self-worth is strong, individuals generally experience high confidence, resilience, and healthy relationships. When it’s low, it can lead to negative self-talk, unhealthy behaviors, and difficulties in relationships and personal growth.
The feeling of being not good enough is overwhelming and can be all-encompassing. It’s also changeable. You don’t have to feel this way forever, and you can begin to lead a life where you feel confident in who you are and see the value that you bring to the table.
How Can Therapy Help?
Therapy for self worth can help you:
My approach to therapy for self worth involves first getting to the root of what’s causing these patterns and addressing the underlying factors.
For many, self worth may be rooted in childhood experiences where one received repeated messaging that they were unworthy or unlovable. For others, these patterns developed later in life to cope with stressful environments, trauma, low self-worth or anxiety. Because self worth can result from so many different factors, therapy will look different for each person.
